Thursday 17th December 2009 (Burleigh Heads, QLD): Billabong International has today announced that after discussions with the Association Of Surfing Professionals (ASP) and surfer representatives from the World Professional Surfers (WPS) it was collectively decided the Billabong Pro Mundaka would no longer be a fixture of the ASP Men’s World Tour in 2010.
After 10-years at the location it was felt that Mundaka’s dependency on large swells and short tide windows to allow competition made it difficult for the event to be completed within the normal event waiting period.
While Mundaka on its day remains one of the worlds premier breaks, ten years of competition provided very few days of excellent conditions at Mundaka with many of the heats being held in the back-up locations. Billabong, the ASP and the surfers would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the people, the authorities of Mundaka, Bakio, Sopelana and the local region for their loyalty and support While there will be no Billabong world tour event scheduled for Europe in 2010, the company is exploring a number of potential opportunities for elite world tour competition in the region for 2011.
