The world’s most extreme surfing event, the 2009 Billabong Pro Tahiti presented by Air Tahiti Nui, will return to the treacherous reef break of Teahupoo bigger and better than ever from May 9th to 20th. Event no.3 of 10 on the 2009 ASP World Tour will see the world's top 45 surfers compete for the ultimate honour of being crowned a Teahupoo champion.
The 2009 Billabong Pro Tahiti winner will add his name to an exclusive list that includes three time world champion Andy Irons (Haw) and nine time world champion Kelly Slater (USA).
The beautiful palm-fringed tropical island and challenging break attracts the world's best surfers every year to the Billabong Pro Tahiti presented by Air Tahiti Nui.
“Billabong is extremely excited to be returning to Tahiti for our ninth consecutive year,” said Billabong Australia General Manager Andrew Flitton.
“The adrenalin rush of the wave, the hospitable locals, the ocean lifestyle and the sheer beauty of Tahiti makes this event the one that every surfer aspires to win.
“Billabong is committed to continuing its involvement in Teahupoo and Tahitian surfing. We are currently in negotiations with ASP to extend our Tahiti event license well past 2010,” added Flitton.
Teahupoo is not only a true test of elite competitive surfing but the remote location can also create other challenges in staging the world tour event. However the live webcast, a specially built judging tower located 800 metres offshore and the vocal locals in the crowded channel all add to the electric atmosphere.
“This unique event would not be possible to stage without the help of the Tahitian Surfing Federation, the experienced boat drivers and the friendly Teahupoo local families,” said Billabong Pro Tahiti Event Manager Michael Talbot.
“Their input has proven to be invaluable every year and Billabong is extremely thankful for their support,” added Talbot.
