Kelly Slater has dominated competitive surfing for two decades, garnering an unprecedented ten ASP World Championships, 44 Elite Tour wins, two ESPN X Games gold medals, 14 Surfer Poll Awards, the Laureus World Action Sportsman of the Year Award and induction into the Surfing Hall of Fame.
He also received high praise from the U.S. House of Representatives with a (unanimous) bipartisan resolution passed in May 2010 recognizing his outstanding and unprecedented achievements in the world of surfing and for being an ambassador of the sport and excellent role model. At the age of 38, Kelly is also considered by many experts to be one of the best competitive athletes of all time, having been both the youngest and oldest world champion in a sport, with a career win percentage that nears eighty percent and climbing. And his progression and approach continue to change how people surf and view the sport.
Kelly’s professionalism, philanthropic work, character and style have also redefined the archetype of a surfer. He is committed to protecting the world’s oceans and its marine inhabitants, using his influence and status to educate the public about important environmental issues. The Kelly Slater Foundation (www.kellyslaterfoundation.org) raises awareness and financial support for existing socially and environmentally conscious charities, hosting fundraising events and procuring donations from both corporations and individual philanthropists. Kelly also has two decades of television, film and music projects to his credit. He was featured in the Sony Pictures animated film Surf’s Up; produced an MTV surf special “Kelly Slater Celebrity Invitational”; appeared in the Quiksilver films Letting Go, Cloud 9, and A Fly In the Champagne; taught bunnies to surf on the E! Channel’s “Girls Next Door”; hosted a Sirius radio show “K-OS”; produced and starred in The Ultimate Wave Tahiti 3D a film created to educate younger generations about ocean ecosystems and wave formation science; and as a songwriter and guitarist, Kelly released an album, Songs From the Pipe (1998), on Sony with his band The Surfers.
He has also been known to take the stage with friends such as Jack Johnson, Ben Harper and Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder. He also has a diverse range of publishing and advertising projects to his name including: Kelly Slater’s Pro Surfer, a hit video game with Activision; a best-selling autobiography Pipe Dreams, which has been translated into six languages; a coffee table memoir For The Love; a section in the 2009 Sports Illustrated The Pop Up Book of Sports; and he’s been featured in global advertising campaigns for companies such as Pentax, L’Oreal, Versace, Hinano, TIM Telecom, Mercedes Benz, Kiehl’s, and Apple.
Kelly has appeared in countless international fashion, lifestyle surfing magazines, including Outside, Men’s Journal, Men’s Health, The New York Times, Transworld Surf, Sports Illustrated/SI Swimsuit Models (Voted Best-Looking Athlete), People Magazine (Voted “50 Most Beautiful People”), Surfer (Voted “#1 Surfer of All Time”), and most recently appeared in ESPN Magazine’s 2010 “Body Issue” that pays homage to the world’s top athletes. Kelly has also appeared in numerous MTV and ESPN shows, including “Jim Rome Is Burning” and the ESPN special “Down The Barrel.”
Since 1990, Kelly has been sponsored by Quiksilver (quiksilver.com), the world’s leading board sports manufacturer, where he influences and consults on the design and testing for the company’s signature series of high-performance wetsuits and board shorts. He also works closely with action sports industry leaders Channel
Islands Surfboards (cisurfboards.com) on a signature series of surfboards, and with CI’s founder Al Merrick on the design of his personal quiver of boards. Kelly’s sponsors also include Surf Hardware/FCS, and his own brand Komunity Project, a premium surf accessories company. Kelly divides his time between California, Hawaii and Florida, when not traveling on the contest circuit. Kelly also has a passion for golf and plays celebrity pro-am tournaments around the world with a three handicap.
