Combine the world famous Irish hospitality with breathtaking winding coasts, countless untouched secret surfing spots dotted along the ‘Emerald’ coast and add some of the most world class waves the Atlantic has on offer and what do you get – a rising surf destination which attracts both amateur and professional surfers from every corner of the globe.
The focal point of Ireland’s growing surf scene can be traced to Bundoran in County Donegal, which is found in the northwest of the country. Over the years it has hosted many European Surfing Championships, has a bustling surfing culture and houses several surf schools. Even though the waves might not be as ‘comfortable’ as those found in other places, the never-ending coastline welcomes huge swell from the Atlantic.
However, don’t limit yourself just to Bundoran because other challenging swells can be found in Strandhill, County Mayo and in Ireland’s premier surf spot, Easkey, in County Sligo. Attention: Not recommended for wimps who faint at the sight of cold water.
